Why am I so obsessed with tattoos? I only had 1 small tracery on my left ankle long time ago. It was without any meaning and at that time only scary guys on motorcycles had them (at least in my neighbourhood). Nowadays, it is a common thing and almost everybody has at least one tattoo. I got my second one few months ago and I love it. It presents everything I love. Cats and fashion. Fashionable cat. Mysterious cat mask. What do you think?
I know my reasons, but why people do it, what are their reasons? What were their reasons to start doing it? How did it start at the first place? So, I went to read about it on Wikipedia. It says that tattooing was being practiced since the Neolithic time and at almost all continents. The purposes were different, from status indication, religion, healing, and even as form of punishment. Female mummies were found in Egypt with scars suggesting that they were treated by tattooing. In ancient China tattooed people were mostly prisoners and criminals. Marco Polo, the famous Croatian wanderer, wrote of Quanzhou, "Many come hither from Upper India to have their bodies painted with the needle in the way we have elsewhere described, there being many adepts at this craft in the city".
The word tattoo is believed to originate from the Samoan word tatau. Samoans did it to a young boys who were entering the leadership roles of their tribes, but ‘tatau’ was not only men thing, women did it, too.
Actually, when you read the history of the tattoo and tattooing you can find it everywhere, and many years even centuries ago. Mediterranean was not exception with Greek, Roman and Persian cultures. Until these days it developed that much that the Mattel made a tattooed Barbie Doll. Reasons changed and are very different; beauty, memory, braveness, scariness, bets, obsession etc. Like it or not, it became a sort of art. Look at mine! Pure art!
