Starting a project, small or big, is so exciting and interesting and looking your vision becoming reality is incredible but finishing the project is the thing that lifts my confidence and builds my self esteem. And not only that, it makes the whole thing more amusing and fun to do. To become stronger and more confident I always have transformed my tasks into small projects so I can start, run and finish them in period of time and be happy with the result.
This was one of those tasks. I have to say task because weddings are not my thing.
I was invited as a date to this big wedding (a Croatian football player from Croatian Club Rijeka, that just won the National Championship for the first time in its history and his handball player girlfriend) and although I don’t like Croatian weddings after a long period of thinking and rethinking I decided to accept the invitation by making it into my own little fashion project. And I’m presenting it here.
I probably can’t escape a question going around your minds, ‘Why don’t you like weddings? It’s the most beautiful party that can be!’
Well, here where I live weddings changed a lot and they are not so intimate nowadays. There is lot’s of people that not even bride and groom know all the guests, the music is not the one that I can hold out not to mention to dance to it, sitting there in a crowd with strangers and eating foods that I’m not allowed (doctor’s order), .. is just not my type of a beautiful party.
So, it is not that I don’t have nothing fancy to wear or enough money to buy something ‘weddingly’ but as I wrote before that I like to make my tasks as projects I got the idea to try to waken up my creativity and my old hobby that I was practicing when I was a teenager: sewing clothes.
I decided to design and make my own outfit for this event. I share it with you here so you can write me your thoughts about it.
I had several inspirations, first one started with locally designed T-shirt with my favourite Mediterranean plant, Spartium or commonly known Spanish broom, on it. I am so into this style: simple T-shirt with great design on it with lot’s of jewellery and suitable make up in combination with a grand, striking tulle skirt.
Thinking about it further and talking to my mother who was my assistant during the whole project, after all, she sews every day and has more experience then me, I found beautiful shiny yellow fabric which I definitely decided to use for sewing a skirt.
Then the Met Gala 2017 was held and I immediately fell in love with hot pink Chanel dress that Lily Rose Depp was wearing. I wanted to make a dress similar to that one, in yellow. But, as always there is a but. My yellow fabric is not adapted for sewing that kind of a dress so I had to change the design.
Nevertheless, I decided to make an ankle skirt which was not as easy assignment as I though, at least not for me because I didn’t sew anything for a long long time now. But at the end, the result is satisfying. Few things could be better but I’ll keep them to myself.
My mother was not so fond of the Spanish broom T-shirt to dress for the wedding so she brought from the history the old rest piece of a black polka dots fabric that my graduation skirt was made of, and I made the top out of it.
Nicole Kidman’s Calvin Klein by Appointment black and white dress from the Cannes Film Festival 2017 was my inspiration to do it.
Why am I writing about this in the first place? Why would you read about it at all?
Well, my point here is not to brag about my skills and my looks, there are so many mistakes on that skirt and not to mention the top and I’m not having the model body or face, I have wrinkles and grey hair, I have strange dots on my shoulders and scratches on my hands from playing with my cats, and not to mention belly fat or nervous sweating.
But I don’t care!!
I made this outfit all by myself, and had a little help with hair and make up, but this whole fashion project was my idea, my action and my performance and I wore it proudly and with confidence. I was my self. I acted as myself. Different and unique. As I am and as I want to be.
This is my advice and my shout to all of you reading me, don’t just copy paste store windows or magazine outfits or red carpet celebrities, don’t just blend in the crowd and lose yourself, wake up and be yourself. Take them as your inspiration and use them to get ideas.
People will love you, others will hate you, somebody will notice you, most of them won’t but as long as you are yourself and you feel good in your skin, in your outfit, who cares.
Whatever you choose to wear let it be a reflection of you, your personality and your confidence, something you want to present to the world and something that world should read on you meeting you every day.
It’s actually very easy, make it as your little project and finish it!
