French style away from France? How is this possible? Well, it is and very easy so, because Mediterranean in its diversity has on the other hand very much similarities that make it special and recognisable. And I’m happy that it is so and that I found a little piece of French style very near me so I don’t have to travel all over to France to fill my batteries.
Not far away from the National Park Krka (Croatia has 8 of National Parks) there is a small agrotourism facility run by the Kalpic family and made with love and care.
Every detail is carefully created and used to present the beauty of the nature and human integration in it. Happiness of the children running around with animals, satisfied faces of the foreigners at the home made “peka” dinner learning how it is made, never ending smile on the faces of our hosts, pool refreshments before going to sleep, calming dog talks and caw bell ringing coming from the near village are the pictures and sounds not often seen or heard in the city.
After one night, batteries are almost full. Next day we are ready to visit the Krka National Park to enjoy the beauty of nature from close.
Seven waterfalls along the 109 km2 of the Krka river are named National Park in 1985. with what was confirmed the beauty and the natural and cultural richness of the area.
Beautiful seven waterfalls are made thanks to the special limestone called tufa that is coming out of the cold water of the river making the beautiful geomorphological shapes. In one part of the Krka Canyon the numerous backwaters and overgrown cascades make special shapes called by the locals “The Necklaces” because of the flashes of silvery colour.
Due to the very good position of the Krka river there are more then 1000 different animal and plant species in the area or in the water.
Not only animals and plants like to live here, there are many remains proving that humans were here too. From the Roman aqueduct of the city of Scardona and Roman military camp in Burnum to the Middle Age Croatian fortifications from the 14th century along the River flow.
The most interesting and preserved part of the nature’s and human’s creation is the little island in the middle of the River, called Visovac with it’s church and franciscan monastery built in 15th century.
It is also possible to visit the little ethnographic museum of the local life with the presentation of the mill and the hydro-electric power plant at the Skradinski Buk waterfall and have a little swim at the small river beach at the Roski Slap waterfall. If you dare, the water is freezing in the high summer too.
Orthodox monastery named Krka and the Manojlovacki slap waterfall near Burnum was too much for this time and in this hot weather conditions so I left it for the next time. I’ll return to Krka definitely again.
